Seniors Lift @ERAUWSoccer to 2-1 Defeat of Rollins on Senior Night

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team celebrated its 2018 Senior Night with a 2-1 Sunshine State Conference win over Rollins, Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. Saturday's win helped the Eagles extend their home winning streak to seven games, and improved their overall record to 7-6 and their SSC ledger to 5-4.

ERAU honored its six-woman senior class on Saturday, as Annie Gelnaw, Helena Hansson, Emmie Johansson, Stina Naess Berge, Guro Naess Berge and Rachel Owens played the final regular season home game of their careers. It was the seniors who led the way for the Eagles as Johansson and Stina Naess Berge each scored to propel the home team to the win.

Much of the first half was played between the boxes as each team managed just two shots each in the first 45 minutes of play. Johansson recorded the period's only shot on frame, while the Tars registered the only two corner kicks, but at the end of the half, the game was scoreless.

The Eagles broke the deadlock early in the second half. In the 49th minute, ERAU earned a corner kick, which was taken by Eva Jonsdottir. Jonsdottir's kick fell into the middle of a crowded six-yard box and Johansson, playing with her back to the goal, back-heeled the ball between Rollins goalkeeper Kelly Rowswell's legs and into the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles were unable to maintain the one-goal advantage, however, as the Tars tied things up on a Sarah Buckley penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

With just over 13 minutes left in regulation, Gelnaw played a ball in from the right side to Johansson who was brought down inside the 18-yard box. Stina Naess Berge took the resulting penalty kick and put the Eagles back on top with her second goal of the year.

The Tars managed two corner kicks and a shot in the closing minutes, but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities, resulting in the Eagle win.

"Senior Night is always tough because on one hand you're really fired up to play well for the seniors, but it's also an emotional day," ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon said following the match. "I thought we looked drained and a little sluggish in the first half. I thought we started the second half much better and I was happy to get a goal in the first five minutes. I wish we could have finished the opportunity right after that and given ourselves a little wiggle room. In typical Rollins fashion, they kept fighting and equalized on a spectacular PK. It was no secret there was a lot on the line tonight for both teams, so we are thrilled to get three important points and finish our regular season undefeated at home. It's a fitting, blue-collar win for our seniors and we couldn't be more thankful for positive legacy they'll leave here."

The Eagles will wrap up regular season play on the road on Tuesday when they head south to take on Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m.
