Golden Goal Lifts @ERAUWSoccer to SSC Semifinals

TAMPA, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team picked a great night to record its first road win of the season as the Eagles upended Tampa (7-6-4) 1-0 in double overtime to advance to the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference tournament. Now 8-7 on the year, the fifth-seeded Eagles will face top-seeded and ninth-ranked Barry in Miami Shores on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Tampa generated more possession in the contest, outshooting the Eagles 23-10, but the Blue and Gold kept many of those attempts long-range.  Led by Dana Ruchti who matched her season-high save total with seven stops on Monday, the Embry-Riddle team kept the speedy Spartan attack at bay to come away with the win.

The first half saw Tampa with a 9-1 shot advantage, but Ruchti was key for ERAU between the pipes. The sophomore hauled in four saves, including stopping a strike by Emily Cady in the 39th minute and another by Lisa Caprara in the 41st minute to keep the Spartans off the board, and at the intermission, both teams were locked in a scoreless tie.

The home team continued to pressure the Eagles throughout the second half, but the ERAU defense was up to the challenge with Ruchti turning back the Spartans' four shots on frame. On the other side of the ball, the Eagles generated scoring chances of their own, including a Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir shot from point blank range that was blocked and Emmie Johansson's attempt that was collected by Tampa netminder Megan Bromwell  With both teams' defenses standing strong, neither side was able to find the back of the net and the game went into overtime.

The Spartans registered three shots in the first 10 minutes of extra time, but once again the Eagle defense was able to hold Tampa in check.

The Eagles took the first shot in the second overtime period, but it was blocked by a Tampa defender. Following a Spartan miss on the other end, the Eagles powered down the field. Maria Schmiedhofer completed a pass to Annie Gelnaw on the right side of the box who took a few touches before sending the ball across the face of goal. Guro Naess Berge raced into the box and rifled her first goal of the season into back of the net to give the Eagles the win.

"First, I want to give credit to Tampa and their players," ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon said. "This was a real battle and I don't think either team held back. It was a night where neither team deserved to lose. I am beyond proud of our team tonight! We talked about having a sense of urgency and leaving here with no regrets. They bought into our game plan and executed it with a ton of heart. The goal is a perfect example as it went through players that hadn't come off the field all game, but they found a way to keep pushing. And the energy on the sideline was outstanding- truly it was a complete team effort. Now, we get to extend our season and get another chance at a good Barry team Thursday."
