MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort in the program's first Sunshine State Conference semifinal, but the Eagles were unable to get by the tournament's No. 1 seed, falling to Barry 4-0 on Wednesday. The loss capped an 8-8 campaign for the Eagles, while the ninth-ranked Lady Bucs remained undefeated at 15-0-1.
Barry claimed the lead early in the contest thanks to Sarah Wignall's finish of a set piece in the fifth minute. The Eagles had chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half, including a
Julia Olsson attempt that whistled across the goal and
Sophie Brundin's header that sailed high of the mark. However, it was the Lady Bucs who were able to find the net again as goals in the 28
th and 38
th minutes gave the home team a 3-0 lead at the half.
The Lady Bucs quickly added another goal to their tally just over two minutes into the second half. The Eagles continued to battle and while they were able to keep Barry from scoring for the remainder of the game, they were unable to score a goal of their own, resulting in the 4-0 final.
Thursday's game was last in the collegiate careers of seniors
Annie Gelnaw,
Helena Hansson,
Emmie Johansson,
Guro Naess Berge,
Stina Naess Berge and
Rachel Owens, all of whom helped the Eagles transition from the NAIA to NCAA II.
"We are so grateful for our seniors who have given so much to this program." ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "That's the worst part of the night- it ends the Embry-Riddle career of six wonderful people. They selflessly came into this program knowing they would give up two years of postseason during our provisional period in Division II. This alone speaks volumes about the character and team-first mentality they've had here. I am truly honored to have been their coach and know they have big things ahead in their futures. We are going to miss them!"
