DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team notched its fourth straight win of the season on Wednesday, claiming an 84-65 home victory against Puerto Mayaguez at the ICI Center. On a night that saw team and individual records fall,
Morgan Ackermann led the way with a career high 22 points as the Blue and Gold improved to 4-0 on the year.
The Eagles shot the ball well from the perimeter in the first half, connecting on 52.4 percent (11-of-21) of their attempts on the way to a program-best 15 made threes on the night. Ackermann was one of five Eagle players who scored in double-figures, shooting a career-high 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe on the way to her first double-digit performance of the year.
Freshman
Macee Sugrue also turned in a career-best scoring performance, with 11 points off the bench, while Lauren Ellenger tallied a game-high nine assists for an Eagle team that registered 26 assists on 29 made field goals.
The Janes scored the first points of the game and both teams exchanged baskets until the 7:07 mark when the Eagles went on a 16-3 run to open up a 14-point (21-7) lead. With 4:17 left in the quarter, Ackermann stepped onto the court for the first time and the senior drilled three threes in a row to help the Eagles maintain their 14-point (31-17) cushion heading into the second frame.
The second period saw the Eagles widen the gap to 19 points (49-30) with 3:07 left to play, but the Janes matched the Eagles scoring output with 18 second-quarter points and recorded the last five points of the frame to keep the Eagle lead at 14 (49-35) at the half.
Turnovers were the Eagles' undoing in the third quarter as UPRM tallied 14 points on nine ERAU miscues to outscore the Blue and Gold 17-14 and cut the lead to single digits (63-52) heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles still struggled to take care of the basketball with six turnovers in the final frame, but they were able to minimize the damage on the defensive end of the floor as the Janes scored just three points off those miscues. At the 6:54 mark,
Cellexia Foster picked up a steal and turned it into a layup. That basket triggered a 13-3 run over the next four minutes and the Eagles led by as many as 23 points, before closing out the 19-point win.
"This was a good win for us tonight after a week off, but we definitely know we can play much better defense and need to step it up on that end," ERAU Head Coach Lisa Nuxol-Wilson said. "Everyone got some decent minutes tonight and contributed, so that will help going into Saturday's game. We need to challenge each other more in practice every day and I know this group will find a way to push each other and keep growing."
Anniris Quintana was the leading scorer for the Janes with 17 points and five rebounds as UPRM falls to 0-3 with the loss.
The Eagles will be back at the ICI Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday to host West Liberty.
