ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team made program history on Saturday, earning its first Sunshine State Conference series win with a doubleheader sweep of Eckerd on the road. The Eagles edged the Tritons 3-2 in the first game and followed with a 7-3 win in the second to improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. Eckerd is now 3-8 on the year and 0-3 in the SSC.
The Eagles will play their first home games of the year on Wednesday when they host Adelphi in a doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.
Game 1
The Eagles had to rally from a two-run deficit as Eckerd plated a run each in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Blue and Gold scored all of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Destiny Carroll started the rally with a one-out double to center field and moved up to third on a ground out. With two outs,
Maggie Scott singled home Carroll and after stealing second, the sophomore came around to score on
Kailah Rain's single to centerfield. Rain advanced to second on the Eckerd attempt to throw Scott out at home and scored the winning run on a pair of wild pitches by Triton starter Nikole Van Gennep.
Lisa Hop notched her first win of the year, surrendering two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Game 2
The second game saw the Tritons take an early 1-0 lead in the first, but
ReAnne Drayton (2-for-4) doubled home
Katy Thompson (3-for-3, 2RBI) to tie the score in the top of the second.
ERAU did most of its damage in the third inning, plating four runs in that frame. Three straight singles loaded the bases to start the inning, bringing Marianna Pereira (1-for-4, 2 RBI) to the plate. Pereira reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Scott (2-for-4, 2 runs) to score and Rain scored when the Tritons' second baseman overthrew the catcher in an attempt to get Rain at the plate. A Thompson single drove in
Peqe Lopez and Thompson later scored the final run of the inning on a Carroll sacrifice fly.
The fourth inning yielded two more runs for the Eagles as Pereira singled home Scott and then crossed the plate on B. Limon's (2-for-4) double.
The sixth inning saw Eckerd push two runs across and threaten to add more, but
Ilona Andringa worked out of a bases-loaded jam to end the rally.
Andringa struck out seven and gave up three runs on eight hits to earn her second win of the weekend.
