DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team celebrated Senior Night in style at the ICI Center on Saturday, taking down Florida Southern 67-62 in the final Sunshine State Conference regular season contest of the year. The only team to sweep the Lady Mocs the season, ERAU improved to 21-6 overall and capped its first season as full-fledged members of the SSC with a 15-5 league ledger. Florida Southern wrapped up the regular season title a week ago and moved to 22-4 overall and 17-3 in the SSC with the loss.
The Eagles' league record makes them a top-four team in the SSC regular season standings, and as a result, they will host a Sunshine State Conference tournament quarterfinal game at the ICI Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. ERAU's opponent will be announced by the league office on Saturday evening after all the regular season games are completed.
Lauren Ellenberger continued her solid all-around play as she achieved the first double-double of her career with 11 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Three other Eagles joined Ellenberger in double-digit scoring led by Nikki Tucker, who had 15 points and six boards, while
Morgan Ackermann added 14 and
Sigrid Sandstrom chipped in 10.
The Eagles got out of the gates early, opening the game on a 6-0 run. The Lady Mocs were a respectable 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the field, but they were no match for the Eagles' 72.7 percent (8-of-11) output from the field, which included a 4-for-6 clip from behind the arc, and at the end of the first quarter the Eagle lead was 21-12.
The offense cooled on both sides of the floor in the second quarter, but the Eagles were still able to outscore FSC 10-8 in the frame and maintained a double-digit lead (31-20) at the halftime break.
At the 6:53 mark of the third quarter, Jensen Blassage connected on a field goal and that triggered a 12-3 FSC run that trimmed the Eagle lead to five (39-34).
Tara Fields' layup put the Eagles back up by seven (41-34), but once again Blassage played a key role in another Florida Southern spurt, and by the end of the third, the visitors had overtaken the lead 44-43.
Neither team was able to score a point in the fourth quarter until the 8:15 mark, when Ellenberger drained her third three of the night. That basket put the Eagles back up by two (46-44) and from that point, they didn't look back. ERAU was 60 percent (6-of-10) from the field and 60 percent (3-of-5) from long range in the final 10 minutes and a 9-for-12 effort from the charity stripe, led by
Sigrid Sandstrom's six free throws in six attempts, helped the Eagles close out the five-point win.
