SANFORD, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team scored a season-high 18 runs on a season-high 18 hits in it's 10-run win over the University of Mary on Friday afternoon. The Eagles (7-10) used three big innings, including a five-run first, in their 18-8 neutral site win over the Marauders (2-8) at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium as the Blue and Gold never trailed in its first of two straights contests at the historic Sanford park.
The Eagles chased Mary starter Isaac Saad from the game after he got just one out in the first as he surrendered four hits, including doubles to
Kyle Guttveg and
Cole Habig as ERAU led 3-0 before Colin Gudereit came in with two men on and one out.
Justin Franklin greeted the new Mary pitcher with a two-run single to right center to make it 5-0 Embry-Riddle after a half inning of play.
The Marauders answered quickly, however, getting four runs on four hits off of ERAUÂ starter
Cody Crouse, making it a one-run game, 5-4.
Luis Olivier collected an RBI single in the second to score
Kyle Marsh from second, getting one run back for the Eagles, and Crouse delivered a scoreless home-half of the frame before the Eagles plated a seventh run in the third on an infield hit from Guttveg, plating Franklin after he walked and moved around the bases on successive bunts.
Again the Marauders were able to answer, scoring two runs on a Chris Scott single through the left side, but Crouse was able to keep the Eagles in front by inducing a foul out from Nick McCann.
Olivier smacked his first home run of the season to lead off the fourth, and
Matthew Russell entered in relief of Crouse to start the bottom of the inning, going 1-2-3 to keep the 8-6 lead for ERAU.
Both Russell and Mary's Jake Johnson pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings, but the Eagles got a leadoff walk from
Cole Habig as Johnson gave way to Kenny Slominski in the seventh. After Habig stole second,
Jake Malone brought him in with a single to left center, and that started a string of three straight hits, as
Cody Bogart and Guttveg followed suit, making it 11-6 before Marsh singled in Guttveg to push the lead to 12-6 ERAU.
Mary stuck around with two runs in the seventh, but ERAUÂ put the game away with a five-run eighth on just two hits, as the advantage grew to 17-8.
Dominic Jeancola pitched a scoreless eighth before
Zach Howard homered for the ninth time this season in the ninth, and
David Romanowski made his Eagle debut in the last of the ninth, tossing a scoreless frame to seal the 18-8 win.
Russell (2-2) got the win three innings of relief, while Jeancola and Romanowski combined for three scoreless innings at the tail end of the contest. Guttveg finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs, and Marsh, Olivier and Malone all went for three hits and multiple RBIs.
The Eagles take on Tiffin tomorrow, Saturday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium.
