DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team won its second straight Sunshine State Conference series with a split on Saturday against visiting Barry at ERAU's Sliwa Stadium. The Eagles (17-26, 7-17 SSC) saw it's six-game win streak snapped in the opener as the Bucs (20-24, 7-17) won 6-2, but the Eagles answered back to take the rubber game and claim the series with an 11-6 victory in the series finale.
Embry-Riddle stays at home to host Florida National on Wednesday, May 2 at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
Game 1 - BU 6, ERAU 2
The Bucs were able to force a true rubber game thanks to a 6-2 win in Saturday's opener, going out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth before holding off the Eagles in the ninth as BU starting pitcher Nicholas Bralczyk did not allow a hit until a
Luis Olivier single with two outs in the sixth.
Garrett Goodall and Bralczyk did battle through the two innings, neither allowing a run, but the Bucs were able to get to Goodall in the third on back-to-back doubles, taking a 1-0 lead.
ERAU was able to get a man in scoring position in the bottom of the third when
Kyle Guttveg walked with one out and stole second, but Bralczyk got out of it and moved the game to the fourth where the visitors doubled the lead on Garrett Thompson's double to score Richie Solbavarro.
Two key errors in the top of the fifth eventually led to three unearned runs for the Bucs as their lead grew to 5-0.
Matthew Russell relieved Goodall with two outs in the sixth, stranding a pair of runners with a ground ball to third.
Olivier's single broke up Bralczyk's no-hit bid, but he was left on the bases as the Eagles were held scoreless for the sixth straight inning.
Anthony Gutierrez took over for the Bucs to start the seventh, and
Cole Habig immediately tripled down the right field line, scoring on
Cody Bogart's single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 5-1. However, the Bucs got that run back in the eighth to go back up by five.
The Eagles made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, forcing Barry to go to closer Daniel Broeseker after a pair of Buc pitchers were only able to get one out while the Eagles loaded the bases. Broeseker got Guttveg to ground out to third, bringing in a run to make it 6-2 before striking out
Jake Malone to end the threat and the game.
Barry out-hit the home team 14-4 as Olivier was the only Eagle to collect multiple hits.
Game 2 - ERAU 11, BU 6
Embry-Riddle erased deficits of 2-0 and 5-2 in the early going in the series finale before outscoring the Bucs 6-1 over the final five innings to secure the series win.
The two teams traded two-run homers in the first, the Bucs' coming via Ryan Baldwin and the Eagles' coming off the bat of
Kyle Marsh, his ninth of the year.
Eagle starter
J.C. Carrell was chased from the game in the third as Barry plated three runs on four hits before
Aidan Brady was able to get out of the inning as BU led 5-2.
Brady kept the Bucs scoreless in the fourth and the Eagles got things going in their half of the inning, starting with a
Zach Howard single to left before Bogart launched his fourth long ball of the year to left, cutting the Barry lead to 5-4.
Justin Franklin tripled in the next at-bat before Malone brought him in with a double just past the glove of Barry's shortstop, tying the game at 5-5.
Brady again delivered a scoreless frame in the fifth and ERAU got another big hit from Franklin with two on in the bottom of the inning. Olivier walked before Bogart singled with one out and Franklin found a gap in the right side of the infield with a base hit, scoring Olivier, and when the ball was misplayed by Baldwin in right, Bogart scored to make it 7-5, Embry-Riddle.
Brady struck out the side in the sixth, and got two outs in the seventh before the Bucs loaded the bases, causing the Eagles to go to
Dominic Jeancola. Jeancols induced a harmless pop up to end the frame and keep Brady in line for the win.
Howard smacked his SSC-leading 19th homer in the last of the seventh, a solo shot to left, adding to the Eagle lead, but Barry got the run back in the eighth as the score stood at 8-6 in favor of the hosts.
The Blue and Gold busted things open in the last of the eighth, scoring three runs for some big insurance as Marsh and Olivier both collected RBIs and another ERAU run scored on a wild pitch for an 11-6 Eagle lead.
Jeancola went out for the ninth to close things out, working around a couple of two-out baserunners by striking out Arrison Perez for his fourth save of the year, and second in as many days.
Six Eagles had two hits, while Marsh had three RBIs and Bogart finished with two. Brady (2-6) got the win in 4.0 innings of relief.
