DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A long weekend of Sunshine State Conference baseball came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the No. 4 Tampa Spartans stayed in first place in the SSC with a sweep of the Embry-Riddle baseball team at Sliwa Stadium. The Spartans (28-5, 17-1 SSC) finished off a 13-5 victory in the extension of Saturday's game after weather pushed the final inning into Sunday before taking a 9-4 decision in the series finale.
The Eagles will travel to St. Augustine on Tuesday, April 10 to take on Flagler at 6 p.m.
Game 1 - UT 13, ERAU 5
More than three and a half hours of delays pushed the end of the middle game of the series to Sunday as Tampa won 13-5 over the Eagles, using a big third inning and never really allowing ERAU to get back into it.
A three-run first for the Spartans was answered by the home team thanks to a
Luis Olivier double and
Zach Howard home run as the two teams were tied 3-3 after an inning of play.
UT took the lead in the second on a wild pitch and put the game effectively out of reach in the third thanks to a five-run frame, going up 9-3.
Neither team scored until the Spartans in the fifth when they added two runs on four hits, while ERAU finally got another run in the seventh when
Mitchel Lindheim scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles got their last run of the game in the eighth when
Kyle Guttveg singled home
Cole Habig, but the visitors tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth to account for the 13-5 final.
Game 2 - UT 9, ERAUÂ 4
It was the Eagles who scored first in the final game of the series as a passed ball and infield single from
Justin Franklin gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead and after UT got a single run in both the second and third off of
Garrett Goodall, the game turned into a pitcher's dual as Goodall and his UT counterpart Cheyne Bickel threw up zeros after zeros.
A leadoff triple in the Tampa seventh led to the Spartans taking a 3-2 lead after Goodall was relieved, and UT added one more in the inning before
Dominic Jeancola got out of the frame.
Tampa pushed across another run in the eighth and ERAUÂ couldn't answer in the home half as the Spartans took a 5-2 lead into the ninth.
Tampa scored four insurance runs in the top of the ninth before ERAUÂ managed two runs of its own, but a ground out ended the threat with two men on as Tampa wrapped up the three-game sweep.
