FLORENCE, Ala. – Embry-Riddle Softball's 2018 campaign came to an end with a 4-1 loss to West Florida on the second day of the NCAA II South 2 Regional tournament on Friday. The Eagles, who were seeded sixth, capped the season at 33-15 and advanced to postseason play in just their first year as full members of NCAA II.
""I'm so proud of this entire team and what they've accomplished this year," ERAU Head Coach
Kelsi Dunne said. "They bought into the culture we've been building and have worked very hard this entire year to make it to the post season. Unfortunately, we fell short today, but I know they will hold their heads high knowing they've made program history. This team has set the foundation and the expectation of the Embry-Riddle way for the future of our softball program. I'm just very proud of every one of our Eagles."
Miscues proved costly for the Blue and Gold who surrendered two unearned runs to fall behind Argonauts early in the contest. West Florida put two runners on via a walk and a hit by pitch, but it was an Eagle throwing error that gave UWF its first run in the second.
In the top of the third, Reanne Drayton reached on a walk, moved up on a
Lisa Hop bunt single and reached third when
Maggie Scott was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases with just one out. However, the Eagles left all three runners stranded and the Argonauts capitalized on another Eagle throwing error in the bottom of the frame to increase their advantage to 2-0.
The Eagles finally broke through with a run in the fourth.
Destiny Carroll led off the inning with a double to center field and went to third on an errant throw by the West Florida center fielder. Drayton put a ball in play that was fielded by Tiona Hill, but the Argonaut third baseman hesitated before throwing the ball to first, and that hesitation led to Carroll coming across for the Eagles' only run of the contest.
ERAU starter
Ilona Andringa gave up just four hits in six innings of work, but two of those hits came in the sixth inning, including a two-run homer by Callan Taylor that sealed the win for West Florida.
Friday's game was the last in the collegiate careers of Andringa, Carroll,
Mackie Chandler,
Eryn Chester, Hailey Jackson and
Kailah Rain. The six seniors helped the Eagles complete the transition from the NAIA to NCAA II and played an integral role in the program's first Sunshine State campaign as the ERAU finished second in the regular season league standings at 20-10.
