DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team gave third-ranked Lynn all they could handle and then some, but their upset bid fell just short as a late-game goal led to a 3-2 win for the visitors at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium Saturday night.
Lynn (11-0-1, 7-0-1) scored the first goal of the night early, as in the fifth minute, Lukas Ostermann scored from close range on a pass from Julian Kirsting for his fifth goal of the season.
That would be all the scoring in the first half, as the Fighting Knights held a 5-4 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes of play. The Eagles had a pair of shots blocked, while the others missed high and wide.
Embry-Riddle (3-8-0, 2-6-0) would manage to tie the game in the 65th minute, as the Eagles managed play a ball ahead to
Diogo Cobos deep in the Lynn zone, who worked around a pair of defenders to play the ball back out near the top of the penalty area to a hard-charging
Christian Mather, who fired a shot past goalkeeper Kontantin Fuhry for his first goal of the season.
The game would not remain tied long as the action picked up in the minutes to follow. Lynn regained the lead in the 74th minute as Ostermann scored his second goal of the night, as he found the bottom right corner on a cross from Levin Sandmann to make it a 2-1 game.
The Eagles would be the beneficiaries of some good fortune just four minutes later, as a ball played into the box by
Tim-Frederik Lange deflected off a Lynn defender and found its way into the back of the net to even the score at 2-2.
The Fighting Knights would go back ahead for good in the 83rd minute, as after a foul was committed by Embry-Riddle, a free kick was awarded and Lukas Hombach fired a shot that got by a diving
Jack Crichton for the go-ahead score.
Lynn finished the night with 17 shots, 10 on goal, while the Eagles managed only five shots, two of which were on goal. Crichton recorded seven saves in the contest for the Blue and Gold.
The four seniors on this year's team,
Tim-Frederik Lange,
Alex O'Brien,
Christian Mather and
Roberto Whitley were honored during a ceremony at halftime of the contest.
Embry-Riddle hits the road for their final two games of the season, as first up is a trip to Lakeland to square off against the Mocs of Florida Southern College. Kick-off is set for 7 PM at the Barnett Athletic Complex.
