BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team had No. 12 Lynn on the ropes on Wednesday night on the road, but a late three from the Fighting Knights forced overtime and Lynn escaped the Eagles' upset bid with an 81-79 win. The Eagles (11-16, 4-12 SSC) led by as many as 15 in the second half, but Lynn (19-3, 12-3 SSC) stormed back late to complete the season sweep of the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles did nearly everything right, out-shooting Lynn 45 percent (30-for-66) to 43 percent (29-for-67), while connecting on seven three-pointers to Lynn's six, and turning 15 Lynn turnovers into 18 points. However, the visitors were whistled for 60 percent more fouls than the home team (21-13) and Lynn enjoyed a 17-for-23 clip at the free throw line, their biggest statistical advantage in the contest.
Alston Jones went for 18 points to lead the Blue and Gold, while
Nashad Mackey finished with his 12th double-double of the season (14 points, 10 rebounds) and
Luka Majstorovic had 16 points and six boards.
Chris Murray came off the bench to go for 10 points and eight rebounds.
ERAU took a 36-31 lead into the break and came out of the half on a mission, going on a 15-5 run over the first four minutes to sprint out to a 51-36 lead on a Mackey free throw.
Lynn chipped away at the Eagle lead over the next five minutes, actually taking a one-point lead on a couple of occasions until a Mackey tip-in with 3:02 to play pushed ERAU back in front, 63-61.
After a Lynn free throw
Alston Jones made a driving layup with 47 seconds left to extend ERAU's lead to 65-62, but Michael Baez hit the biggest shot of the night with a trey from the corner with 30 seconds left.
After an ERAU timeout, the Eagles had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but a turnover led to a scramble and
Tylin Lockett-Fuller's half-court heave was blocked, forcing overtime.
In OT the Fighting Knights led for nearly all five minutes, going up four with the first two buckets of the extra period. However, Majstorovic came through with a big and-one to trim the lead down to one with 3:26 left.
With Lynn leading 74-70, the Eagles got a layup from Mackey and then a steal from Jones leading to a run-out for Lockett-Fuller before he was fouled and made a pair of free throws to tie the game with 1:11 to play.
A layup from Lynn gave them the lead for good, but not before the Eagles made it interesting down the stretch, forcing the Fighting Knights to ice the game at the free throw line.
ERAU stays on the road and will take on Saint Leo on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
