ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team was dominant in earning its 11th Sunshine State Conference win of the season, topping Saint Leo 87-63 at the Lions' Marion Bowman Activities Center. Now 16-8 overall, the Eagles remain tied for fourth in the SSC race at 11-6 with three regular season games remaining on the ledger.
Several Eagles posted standout performances on Saturday, led by
Nikki Tucker who scored a game-high 30 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists.
Morgan Ackermann tallied 21 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from long range in the first start of her Embry-Riddle career, while
Jessica Savage tallied a career-best 12 points off the bench.
Lauren Ellenberger finished just shy of a triple-double as she totaled 12 points, nine boards and nine assists to go with two steals.
In their fourth 80-point game of the season, the Eagles were 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field, recording assists on 24 of those attempts. ERAU bested Saint Leo on the boards 36-20 and scored 21 second chance points, while the Lions, who managed just three offensive boards, came up empty in second chance points.
The game was close through the first 10 minutes with ERAU holding a two-point edge (18-16) at the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles quickly distanced themselves in the second period. On the Eagles' first possession of the second, Ellenberger knocked down a three that keyed a 14-2 run and extended the Eagle lead to 30-18. Tucker, who scored 19 points in the first half, saw 12 of those scores come in the second quarter, and at the halftime break, the Eagle lead had swelled to 16 (42-26).
The third quarter saw the Lions shoot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field and Casey Wortley's jumper made it a 12-point game at the 5:46 mark. But whatever momentum the Lions may have had ended when Ackermann drilled back to back treys to end the quarter and build the lead up to 19 (65-46).
Both teams took 13 shots in the fourth frame, but it was the Eagles who made the most of their chances, shooting 69.2 percent (9-of-13) compared to just 38.5 percent (5-of-13) by Saint Leo. Nxuol-Wilson was able to rest her starters in second half of the period and the Eagle players coming off the bench built the lead up to as many as 28 points on the way to the 24-point victory.
Gina Brierly scored 21 points for the Lions who are now 10-15 overall and 5-12 in league play.
The Eagles will be back in the ICI Center at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to host Florida Tech.
