Pereira Makes History in @ERAUSoftball's SSC Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team put on an offensive showcase in its Sunshine State Conference opener Friday night. The Eagles only needed six innings to beat Eckerd 13-5.

Mariana Pereira led ERAU (8-5, 1-0 Sunshine State Conference) by going 5-for-5 with 4 RBIs, and three runs scored. Her performance is the only five-hit game in program history.

Pereira drove in the Eagles' first run of the game in the first frame with an RBI double.  Jayla Jackson would score Pereira with an RBI single. Pereira gave ERAU a 3-0 lead in the second after her RBI single up the middle.

Eckerd (5-8, 1-3 SSC) tied the game in the third after a three-run home run; however, Jamie Mead gave the Eagles a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning after a two-run single. The Tritons tied the game at five after scoring two runs in the fourth.

The Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to RBI singles by Katy Thompson and Mead. The Blue and Gold would hold the lead for the rest of the game.

An Eckerd error, followed by a triple by Pereira and a sac fly by Michy Ramos, allowed ERAU to make it an 11-5 game in the fifth. Lia Johnson kept the rally going in the sixth with an RBI single. Pereira would put an exclamation point on the contest by sending a line drive to the fence with the bases loaded to end the game via the mercy rule, 13-5.

Jayla Jackson earned the win in the circle for the Eagles. She gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings pitched with four strikeouts. Lisa Hop earned the save after entering the game in relief in the top of the fifth. In two innings pitched, the sophomore did not give up a hit while striking out two Eckerd batters.

Mead finished with three hits, three RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Thompson added two hits with two RBIs and a walk. Jackson and Johnson tallied two hits, an RBI and a run scored each. As a team, the Blue and Gold finished with 17 hits, just three hits shy of a program record.

The Eagles wrap up their first SSC series of the season on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Tritons. Game one at the ERAU Softball Stadium takes place at 1 p.m.
