DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball sent its three-member senior class out in style on Saturday as the Eagles defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 74-49 in the final home game of the 2018-19 regular season. The win improved the Eagles' overall record to 17-9 and their Sunshine State Conference record to 12-7.
Playing in the last regular season home game of their Embry-Riddle careers, seniors
Morgan Ackermann,
Lauren Ellenberger and
Sigrid Sandstrom all appeared in the scoring column for the Blue and Gold who notched the 11
th home win of the season. Sandstrom finished with 15 points, while Ackermann contributed 14 points off the bench. Ellenberger added six points and six assists, and her nine rebounds made her just the second member of ERAU Women's Basketball's 500 Rebound Club.
Nikki Tucker recorded her third career double-double with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The first quarter saw the Eagles lead by as many as eight points, but a Jonika Garvin three with five seconds left cut the lead to five (22-17) at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
With 5:53 left in the second, Sandstrom finished an Ellenberger pass to reclaim the eight-point (29-21) advantage for the Eagles, but the Sailfish responded with a 12-3 run, which was punctuated by a Darsan DeShazier three that knotted the score at 32-32 at the half.
The start of the third quarter saw both sides trade baskets in a period that featured six lead changes. At the 6:03 mark, Ackermann knocked down a three that put the Eagles in front by one (40-39) and that lead grew to four (44-40) courtesy of layups by Tucker and
Cellexia Foster. Back-to-back free throws by PBA's Mina Salhia pulled the visitors within five (47-42), but she was unable to get her team closer as she missed on her next two chances at the charity stripe. Foster corralled Salhia's second miss, took the ball down the floor, and drilled a trey with three seconds left to give the Eagles a 50-42 lead heading into the final frame.
The fourth period was all Embry-Riddle. The Eagles went on a 12-4 run to start the quarter and outscored the Sailfish 24-7 on 52.9 percent (9-of-17) shooting from the field and 55.6 (percent) (5-of-9) from beyond the arc to secure the 25-point victory.
Garvin was the high scorer with 15 points for the Sailfish who fell to 5-19 overall and 3-14 in the SSC with the loss.
The Eagles close out regular season play on the road next Saturday, traveling to St. Petersburg to face Eckerd. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
