ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team was unable to come away with a win in the Eagles' final regular season game of 2018-19, as ERAU fell to Eckerd 73-48 at the Tritons' McArthur Center on Saturday. The loss put the Eagles at 17-10 overall and 12-8 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Tritons improve to 20-8 and 14-6 in the league.
The Tritons took control of the game at the onset and did not allow the Eagles to get into a rhythm early on, forcing five turnovers in the first six minutes. The Eagles were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the contest and at the 2:54 mark of the first period, the Tritons led 17-0.
After holding the Eagles to their lowest scoring quarter of the year (5 points) in the first, Eckerd continued to build on the lead in the second quarter and widened the gap to as many as 26 points before taking a 41-16 advantage into the halftime break.
Both teams were even in the second half as Eckerd edged the Eagles 12-11 in the third, and ERAU claimed a one-point advantage, outscoring the Tritons 21-20 in the fourth. While the Eagles were able to improve their offensive output in the last 20 minutes of play, the Tritons' dominance in the first half was all the home team needed to secure the win.
Lauren Ellenberger earned her third double-double of the year with 12 points, 12 rebounds and four steals to lead the Blue and Gold. Chelsea Johnson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Tritons.
With their 12-8 league record, the Eagles finished fifth in the SSC standings and secured the No. 5 seed in the SSC tournament, which begins on May 6. ERAU will travel to Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday to take on fourth-seeded Nova Southeastern in the tournament quarterfinals. Game time is yet to be announced.
