Defensive Struggles cost @ERAUSoftball Series at Saint Leo

St. LEO, Fla. – After winning Friday's game, the Embry-Riddle softball team looked to steal the series by winning at least one game in its Saturday doubleheader at Saint Leo.

SLU (14-11, 7-5 SSC) had other plans and avenged yesterday's loss by taking both games of the twin bill. The Lions took game one by a score of 7-2, followed by winning game two 9-5.

The Eagles struck first in the second inning of game one. Michy Ramos started the rally with a double to right-centerfield. ReAnne Drayton followed with a single through the right side to give ERAU (12-9, 5-4 SSC) a 1-0 lead. Jamie Mead kept the rally going with another single to give the Eagles runners on first and third with one out. Drayton scored after a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game. ERAU loaded the bases in the inning, but Saint Leo held the Eagles to two runs.

ERAU missed on an opportunity to add to its lead in the third inning. After a Katy Thompson single, a hit batter and walk, the Eagles loaded the bases, but they came up empty. ERAU could have used those insurance runs later in the game.

Saint Leo tied the game in the fourth. A leadoff walk and an error gave the Lions runners on first and second with no outs. A strikeout and sac bunt moved the runners over to second and third with two outs. It seemed as if Lisa Hop was going to escape the inning unscathed; however, a two-out hit by the Lions tied the game at two.

The Lions took control after a fifth run sixth inning. Saint Leo only had three hits in the frame, but they took advantage of a walk and two Eagle errors to take a 7-2 lead.

ERAU was unable to spark a comeback in the late innings and went on to lose game one, 7-2. Hop allowed just two earned runs in six innings pitched with four strikeouts. Maggie Scott led the Eagles with two hits and a walk. The Eagles outhit the Lions in the contest seven to six.

SLU carried its momentum at the plate from game one into the second game of the day. The Lions scored in every inning of the contest.

While trailing 2-0 in the third inning, the Eagles battled to cut the lead in half. Hop led off the inning with a single and stolen base. She scored on an RBI single by Scott. Saint Leo answered in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-1 game.

After scoring another run in the fourth inning, a three-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. The Eagles showed some fight in the sixth inning when trailing 7-2. ERAU put up four runs on four hits, including RBI singles by Savannah Brockenbrough and Ramos. The Blue and Gold was back in the game, trailing by just two runs going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Lions answered with two runs in their half of the inning to take a 9-5 lead. ERAU was able to muster two baserunners in the seventh, but it was unable to cut into the lead. SLU took game two 9-5 to win the series.

Scott, Brockenbrough and Meritxell Blesa had two hits each for the Eagles. Ramos had two RBIs while Scott and Brockenbrough drove in a run each.

The Eagles will return home to face Florida Tech in a weekend series. Friday's game at the ERAU Softball Stadium will take place at 4 p.m.
