Jackson's Complete Game Not Enough for @ERAUSoftball

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team had a tough challenge ahead of them in the form of 23rd-ranked Rollins on Friday.

The Tars entered the contest in second place on the Sunshine State Conference leaderboard and a 1.17 team Earned Run Average. Despite an excellent performance in the circle by Jayla Jackson, ERAU (18-18, 10-12 SSC) was unable to provide the run support, dropping game one of a three-game series to Rollins (34-7, 16-6 SSC), 1-0.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings. Mariana Pereira's double in the top of the first gave the Eagles a chance to take the lead with two outs, but she was stranded.

A hit by pitch and a single put runners on first and second with two outs for the Tars in the bottom of the second frame. Jackson forced a flyout to get out of the jam. The Eagles had another chance to score in the top of the third with Maggie Scott on second; however, ERAU was unable to score the junior.

Jackson continued to work through the Rollins lineup that entered the day with the highest batting average and the second-most home runs in the SSC. The Michigan native tallied four strikeouts through the first three innings.

Rollins finally broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles mustered a hit in the top of the sixth but were unable to put anything on the board. Jackson recovered well after the homer, holding Rollins scoreless in the sixth to keep the Blue and Gold within a run heading into the final frame.

ERAU attempted to rally in the top of the seventh. After two quick outs started the inning, Michy Ramos kept the Eagles alive with a single down the right field line. An infield single by Lia Johnson put runners on first and second with Callie Rodriguez at the plate. Unfortunately for ERAU, the runners were stranded after a strikeout sealed the Rollins victory.

Jackson finished the game with one earned run, six hits allowed and five strikeouts in six innings pitched. Eagles totaled seven hits in the game, including two from Ramos.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a Saturday doubleheader. The first pitch of game one takes place at 1 p.m.
