DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd Triton offense was humming on Friday night, and that, combined with Dillon McCollough on the mound proved too much for the 14th-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team as Eckerd won 18-3 to open the two team's three-game Sunshine State Conference set. The Eagles (22-13, 11-5 SSC) fell behind early and couldn't doo much against McCollough, while the Tritons (22-13, 11-8 SSC) moved into second-place in the league standings with the blowout win.
Mitch Calandra had a career-game for the visitors, finishing 5-for-7 with three home runs and eight RBIs to lead an Eckerd offense that collected 21 hits, including four long balls against the Eagle pitching staff.
Justin Glover gave EC a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer, but the Eagles were able to answer when
Kirk Sidwell scored from third on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of
Cole Habig.
The tie wouldn't last long as Calandra hit the first of his three homers in the third, a three-run shot that made it 4-1 and led to Eagle starter
J.C. Carrell giving way to
Troy Naab.
ERAU got a run back in the bottom of the third when
Kyle Guttveg scored an unearned run to cut the deficit to 4-2, but that's the closest the Eagles would be the rest of the night as Eckerd scored in every single inning to finish the contest, including three spots in the fifth and eighth, and a five-run ninth. The only other Eagle run came in the eighth when
Luis Olivier doubled home
Kyle Marsh.
The 18 runs and 21 hits were both season-highs allowed by the Eagle staff. Marsh, Sidwell and Olivier each had two hits for the Eagles on offense.
ERAU will look to bounce back tomorrow when they host Eckerd in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Sliwa Stadium.
