DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd Tritons completed a Sunshine State Conference sweep of 14th-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball on Saturday, winning a wild opener to secure the series win before blowing out ERAU to finish off the 3-0 weekend. The Eagles (22-15, 11-7 SSC) struggled mightily on the mound as Eckerd (24-13, 13-8 SSC) scored 42 runs on 54 hits over the three-game series.
The Eagles will look to right the ship next weekend when they host Lynn in a SSC series, starting with a Friday 6 p.m. game and concluding with a Saturday DH starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1 - Eckerd 7, ERAU 6
The day's opener was a true heartbreak for the home team as the Eagles rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the eighth on the back of a pair of dramatic home runs only to see the Tritons hit their own momentum-swinging long ball in the ninth to take the series from ERAU.
Kyle Guttveg and
Cole Habig hit solo homers in the first and second innings, respectively, but Eckerd led 4-2 after two innings with a four-run second.
Samuel Brunnig was dominant in his relief outing, entering in the second frame and going six innings without allowing a run, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Unfortunately, the Eagle offense couldn't get Brunnig any runs as the game moved to the eighth with the same 4-2 score.
The Eagles finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth after
Kyle Marsh and
Luis Olivier collected one-out singles, leading to
Zach Howard coming to the plate and the senior delivered, hammering a three-run bomb to center, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead in the blink of an eye.
Kirk Sidwell followed by going back-to-back with Howard, a solo long ball to center that made it 6-4.
Eckerd got its own three-run shot to center in the ninth off of Eagle closer
Dominic Jeancola, turning the two-run Eagle lead into a one-run Eagle deficit.
ERAU threatened in the last of the ninth with a leadoff single from Guttveg and after he was moved to second with a sac bunt, the Tritons intentionally walked Marsh to get to Olivier. Olivier grounded into a game-ending double play to give the Tritons the victory.
Game 2 - Eckerd 17, ERAU 6
The second game was all Eckerd as the Tritons raced out to a 7-0 lead before the Eagles got on the board.
Embry-Riddle made things interesting when they cut a 9-2 Triton lead down to 9-6 with a five-run seventh, including another Howard home run, but the visitors answered right back with three runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to account for the 17-6 final.
