BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team dropped the third game of its series at Lynn on Friday.
After taking the first two games of the series against the Fighting Knights, the Eagles were unable to complete the sweep. ERAU (22-19, 14-13 SSC) trailed for the majority of the contest; however, the Blue and Gold nearly mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh. The Eagles plated three runs in the inning, but it was too little too late as a baserunning mistake gave Lynn (16-33, 5-21 SSC) the final out, completing the 5-3 victory.
The Eagles mustered seven hits in the ballgame with four of them coming in the top of the seventh. After trailing 5-0 through the first six innings,
Mariana Pereira and
Katy Thompson attempted to start an Eagle rally with leadoff singles. A fielder's choice and infield single loaded the bases with one out.
Michy Ramos singled to left field to put ERAU on the board.
Jamie Mead followed by reaching on a fielder's choice; however, a baserunning error caused the Australia native to be called out trying to retreat back to first to end the game.
Thompson led the ERAU offense with two hits. The combination of
Jayla Jackson and
Lisa Hop kept the Eagles in the game. Jackson, who started the game, gave up three earned runs in three innings. Hop followed with two earned runs in three innings of relief.
Lynn wasted little time getting on the board. A two-run home run gave the Fighting Knights a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The hosts plated another run in the third after taking advantage of an ERAU error.
The Fighting Knights took advantage of two walks and a wild pitch to plate their fifth run. With runners on first and third and two outs, the runner on first stole second to force a throw from the catcher, allowing the runner on third to score. Lynn scored its last run in the sixth on a two-out double.
ERAU had leadoff singles in the first, second and sixth innings, but it was unable move a runner into scoring position in any of those situations. Today's game snapped a four-game win streak for the Eagles.
The Eagles will hit the road again on Wednesday when they face Flagler in a nonconference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
