DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
Garrett Goodall and
Troy Naab were solid on the mound and the offense did enough as the Embry-Riddle baseball team downed Lynn late on Friday night, 5-3, opening the two team's Sunshine State Conference series. The game, originally scheduled for 6 p.m., was pushed back to an 8:45 p.m. start due to inclement weather before the Eagles (23-15, 12-7 SSC) were able to snap a four-game skid with the win, sending the Fighting Knights (16-24, 6-19 SSC) to their eighth-straight conference loss.
Tomorrow's doubleheader has been pushed back to a 2:30 p.m. start to ensure proper rest for the Eagles and Fighting Knights.
The Eagle defense recorded the first big moment of the game in the top of the first inning when
Zach Howard,
Cody Forster and
Luis Olivier combined to cut down a Lynn runner at the plate. The visitors had a runner at first with two outs when Alejandro Martinez singled to left with the runner on the move. Howard quickly got the ball in to Forster in shallow left as the Lynn runner rounded third and Forster's throw to Olivier at the dish was in plenty of time as the Eagles took momentum into the dugout.
Kyle Guttveg drew a leadoff walk against Lynn starter Nicholis Prather, moving to second on a
John Devine base hit to center. Olivier brought in the first run of the night with a single through the left side, plating Guttveg.
ERAU doubled it's lead in the second after a leadoff triple from
Cole Habig and sac fly from Forster before adding a third run in as many innings when Olivier drove in
Kyle Marsh with a double to the fence in right center following a one-out single from Marsh.
Goodall smoothly worked through the fourth, but an Eagle error in the fifth led to an unearned run for the visitors as Lynn cut the lead to 3-1.
The Eagles chased Prather from the game in the sixth when they strung together three straight hits from
Kirk Sidwell, Habig and
Jake Malone, the last of which brought in Sidwell for a 4-1 ERAU lead. The Blue and Gold tacked on another tally when Devine drew a bases-loaded walk a few batters later.
The Fighting Knights scratched across a couple of runs in the top of the seventh, but Goodall kept his team in front by striking out his sixth batter of the game, stranding a runner at third.
Troy Naab took over for Goodall to start the eighth, fanning two batters before an infield pop up sent the Eagles off the field, and there was little drama in the ninth as Naab collected his first save of the season by facing the minimum on two fly outs and a line out.
Goodall (7-1) earned the win in seven strong innings, scattering eight hits, allowing two earned runs with six Ks. Naab worked a perfect eighth and ninth for ERAU.
Olivier finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Habig had two hits for the Eagles as well.
