BRADENTON, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered a tough loss in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Sunshine State Conference tournament on Friday. After withstanding a five and a half hour weather delay, the fifth-seed Eagles were unable to bounce back after dropping the doubles point and fell to fourth-seeded Rollins 5-2 at IMG Academy.
Doubles play was close in all three matches. Playing at No. 1 doubles
Andres Donayre and
Alexis Guedy trailed Ziad Melhaoui and Andrea Brignacca 6-5. However, they weren't able to complete the match as Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson held off
Lucas Bos and
Mickael Faucher 6-4, and Guillermo Nicolas and Atakan Gezer edged
Blake Rohweder and
Andrej Omeragic by the same margin to give the Tars the doubles point.
Playing at No. 2 singles, Guedy pulled the Eagles level with his 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Nicolas. At No. 1 singles, De Fraia reclaimed the lead for the Tars with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Donayre. The match at the third singles position saw Melhaoui take a 6-2 win over Bos in the first set, but the ERAU sophomore showed tremendous heart and rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 and tie the team score at 2-2.
The Tars got their third point when Brignacca downed
Tim Loerwink 6-2, 6-1 on court six. The matches on courts four and five finished simultaneously with Gai Feigin topping Omeragic 6-3. 6-3 and Gezer holding off Faucher 7-6 (1), 6-1.
The Eagles wrapped up their season at 8-11 overall and finished fifth in the regular season standings.
