MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle baseball registered a season-high 25 hits on Friday night as the Eagles (26-15, 15-7) cruised to an 18-5 win to open their weekend series at Barry (26-16, 13-12).
ERAU wasted no time jumping out in front, as the Eagles scored four times in the first, once in the second, and twice in the third. The Blue and Gold took advantage of a big error in the first inning, scoring all four runs after
Luis Olivier reached on what should have been an inning-ending ground ball to short. After the error,
Zach Howard doubled home Olivier and
John Devine to make it 2-0.
Kirk Sidwell followed the double with a two-run home run to double the lead to 4-0.
Kyle Marsh delivered a two-out double to plate Devine with ERAU's fifth run of the game in the top of the second, and Sidwell launched his second homer of the game in the third, pushing the Eagle lead to 7-1.
Embry-Riddle tacked on four more runs in the fifth, beginning with a Howard home run to lead off the frame. Three batters later,
Jake Malone doubled home
Cole Habig and Sidwell to make it 10-2, and Malone later scored on a double play to push the lead to 11-2.
Olivier plated a run with a sac fly in the eighth, and the Eagles added a few insurance runs in the ninth. The scoring in the final frame started with an RBI double from
Cody Forster and a two-run single from
Kyle Guttveg. Two batters later Guttveg scored on a passed ball, and Devine then came home on a sac fly from
Mike Lawson. Joaquin Sequeria scored the final run of the night for the Eagles, crossing the plate on a Barry error. The Bucs plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, accounting for the 18-5 final score.
Garrett Goodall (8-1) tossed a solid six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out five.
Troy Naab and
Joey Gerber each threw scoreless innings in relief.
Habig was 5-for-5 with three doubles and two runs scored, becoming the 14th player in program history to have a five-hit game and the 11th player to record three doubles in a game. Howard finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Sidwell was 3-for-5 with a pair of homers, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Marsh was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Devine scored four runs after going 3-for-5 with a double and a walk.
As a team, the Eagles' 25 hits are tied for the sixth-most in a game in program history, while their 10 doubles are the second-most in school history. Both numbers rank as the most in a game in the NCAA II era.
The Eagles and Bucs will conclude this three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader that is set to begin at 1 p.m.
