CLEVELAND, Mississippi - A memorable Embry-Riddle baseball season came to an end on Friday evening at Delta State's Ferriss Field as the Eagles dropped a back-and-forth affair to Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd, 10-9. The Eagles (29-22) roared back from a 5-0 deficit to go up by as many as three on two occasions, but a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning pushed the Tritons (31-18) to their fourth win in as many games against the Eagles this season.
For the Eagles, their season concludes in the postseason for the first time in their short NCAA era. In just their second season eligible for the postseason, Embry-Riddle grabbed an at-large berth to the South Regional Tournament. It was the 20th national tournament appearance in program history.
The Tritons scored first, striking for three runs in the third to go up 3-0 before adding a pair of runs in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage.
The bottom of the fifth was when things turned around for the Blue and Gold, starting with a
Kyle Guttveg double to lead off the frame. An error and
Kyle Marsh single later saw the Eagles' first run of the day, and a sac fly from
Zach Howard made it 5-2.
Josh Reynolds singled home a pair of Eagle runners with the bases loaded, cutting the Eckerd lead to 5-4 before
Jake Malone drew an RBI walk to tie the game.
Cole Habig, continuing his hot-hitting in the tournament, smoked a ball over the centerfielder's head to clear the bases and give ERAU it's first lead of the day at 8-5.
Eckerd got a solo homer in the sixth, but
Luis Olivier answered with one of his own in the home-half, pushing the Eagle lead to 9-6.
Another solo shot for EC in the seventh, trimmed the Triton deficit to 9-7, and Sam Cochrane hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth to give Eckerd back the lead at 10-9.
A double play ended the Eagle eighth and ERAU went quietly in the ninth as Eckerd eliminated the Eagles by one run.
Habig finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Olivier went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and
Kyle Marsh had two hits in five at-bats.
Friday's game marked the final one in a Blue and Gold uniform for the team's 13 seniors:
Dominic Jeancola,
Joaquin Sequeira,
Jimmy Jones III,
Jake Malone,
Jordan Hicks,
Daniel Agramont,
Kyle Marsh,
Kirk Sidwell,
