WINTER PARK, Fla. - A sixth-run fourth for the host Rollins Tars proved too much to overcome for the Embry-Riddle baseball team on Friday night as the Eagles dropped their Sunshine State Conference series opener at Rollins, 7-5. The Eagles (26-18, 15-10 SSC) dropped their third straight SSC road contest as the Tars (25-19, 12-13 SSC) held off the Eagles late to secure the two-run win.
Garrett Goodall and Cameron Enck took the mound for their respective teams to start the Friday evening contest, both delivering scoreless innings until the fourth when
Luis Olivier put ERAU in front with a two-run homer to left, his eighth long ball of the season.
The lead didn't last long as the Tars got to Goodall in the fourth with the help of a crucial Eagle error, scoring six times, including a pair of two-run homers, to take a 6-2 lead.
Embry-Riddle started to chip away in the sixth when
Kyle Marsh doubled home
John Devine and then himself touched the plate on an Olivier single. ERAU loaded the bases, but the Tars were able to get out of the jam, sending the game to the bottom of the sixth where they scored a lone run to take a 7-4 lead to the seventh.
Olivier collected his fourth RBI of the night in the seventh when he singled in Marsh to trim the lead to 7-5. ERAU once again loaded the bases following Olivier's single, but once again the Tars got out of it as
Cole Habig flew out to right.
The Eagles couldn't manage to get a put a man on base in the final two frames as Rollins came away with the 7-5 win.
Goodall (8-2) took the loss in four innings of work, with just one of his six charged runs being earned.
Samuel Brunnig and
Troy Naab also pitched for the Blue and Gold.
Olivier went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run, while Marsh finished 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Unfortuantely,
Kyle Guttveg went 0-for-5 at the plate, seeing his 37-game reached base streak come to an end. It was the fourth-longest streak in program history.
The Eagles will look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on Rollins for a single game at 2 p.m.
