DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team battled all 90 minutes Saturday afternoon at the ERAU Soccer Stadium, but wound up falling by a score of 3-2 to Shorter University.
The Eagles (0-2-0) struck first in the contest, as in the 14
thminute,
Tim-Frederik Lange found the back of the net on a cross into the box from
Alex O'Brien. The goal was the first of the year for the Eagles and the sixth of Lange's career.
The Blue and Gold scored again seventeen minutes later, as Lange scored his second goal of the afternoon, weaving his way through heavy traffic to make it a 2-0 game.
Shorter (3-0-0) answered with a goal in the 39
thminute, as Val Evans' free kick from just outside of the box found its mark. The Eagles went into the intermission with a 9-3 advantage in shots.
The Hawks carried their momentum into the second half, as leading scorer Jackson Wheatley tied things at two with his sixth goal of the season on a cross from Thallison Alex just two minutes after play resumed.
The two teams then showcased tough defense for the majority of the second half, until Shorter netted the game-winner in the 87
thminute. Felix Guijosa lined up for a corner kick and curved the ball around a host of Embry-Riddle defenders for his first goal of the season.
Gudmundur Sigurbjornsson had four saves in goal for the Eagles, who were outshot 5-1 in the second half of action.
Embry-Riddle returns to action next Saturday opening Sunshine State Conference play against the Lions of Saint Leo University. The game is set for a 7 PM start at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
