LAKELAND, Fla. – Three Eagles reached double-digit kills on Friday night to lead the Embry-Riddle volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-16) sweep on the road at Florida Southern. The win moves ERAU's record to 7-0, 3-0 in conference play, while the Mocs drop to 2-8, 0-3 in league matches. This marks the first time Embry-Riddle has started a season 7-0 since the Blue and Gold opened the 2015 campaign with eight straight victories.
Kristin vom Schemm and
Melanie Canfield each tallied 12 kills, with vom Schemm hitting .429 and Canfield hitting .647. Canfield's attack percentage ranks as the sixth-best for a match in program history, which marks the second time she's recorded a top-six mark in that category this season after setting the program record earlier this month with a .739 attack percentage against Lees-McRae.
Jordan Schumacher tallied 11 kills and hit .478, while
Theresa Jordan had seven kills and a .429 attack percentage to go along with 10 digs.
Olivia Roa picked up a match-high 13 digs and
Alyssa Rudd totaled a match-best 36 assists.
For the match, ERAU outhit FSC .494 to .235, as the Eagles registered 46 kills with just five errors compared to the Mocs' 31 kills and 11 errors.
The Blue and Gold got off to a tremendous start, jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first set and never looking back. A block from Jordan and
Jenna Bishop increased the lead to 10 points at 14-4, and the Eagles continued to pull away, taking the opening set by a score of 25-11. ERAU hit .500 in the frame with 17 kills and only one error.
Embry-Riddle trailed early in set two, 4-2, before going on an 8-2 run to take the lead, 10-6. ERAU wouldn't trail the rest of the way, slowly increasing the lead and eventually closing out the set on a 4-1 run to win the frame, 25-17. The Eagles hit .607 in the set with 18 kills and just one attack error.
Set three saw FSC jump out to a 5-1 lead only to have Embry-Riddle rattle off five straight points to go ahead, 6-5. A service ace from Canfield increased the lead to 11-8 but the Mocs came back to tie this up at 13. From that point, Schumacher scored back-to-back kills to spark a 3-0 run that became an 8-1 spurt that allowed the Eagles to eventually cruise to a 25-16 win, completing the sweep.
The Eagles will travel to St. Petersburg tomorrow to battle the Eckerd Tritons, who swept Florida Tech on Friday night to go to 9-2 on the season.
