SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Savannah State Tigers weren't feeling the love from Embry-Riddle's
Garrett Goodall on Friday night as the junior righty twirled a complete game, 11-strikeout shutout of SSU to start the two team's series in Savannah. The Eagles (5-2) scored a run in the first and that's all Goodall would need to post the first shutout for the Blue and Gold in 2020.
Goodall (2-1) had a career-high 11 strikeouts and scattered seven hits, all singles, facing the minimum in five of his nine frames. He got all he needed in the top of the first thanks to the speed of
Kyle Guttveg.
Guttveg reached on an error to begin the game, moving to second on a
Mike Lawson single and then scored from second on a deep sac fly from
Luis Olivier. ERAU threatened for more, but were held to just the one run before Goodall took the mound.
The Nanaimo, British Columbia native induced a perfect 5-4-3 double play to end the first inning and away he and the Eagles went.
Olivier led off the third inning with a solo blast, the first of his senior season, doubling the Eagle lead to 2-0, and once again Goodall went 1-2-3 in the next half-inning to get back into the dugout.
Goodall and Luis Torres-Lopez traded scoreless innings until the sixth when the visitors jumped on the SSU pitcher for two more runs, this time off the bat of Guttveg. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out and Guttveg singled to left, bringing in
Josh Reynolds and
Robert Post for a 4-0 cushion.
The Tigers got their first runner into scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Goodall denied the Tigers, ending the frame with a harmless fly ball to center.
Goodall struck out the side in the seventh and in the eighth the Eagles put the game away, scoring five times for a 9-0 advantage.
John Devine, Forster and Guttveg reached to load the bases in front of Lawson and the senior cleared the bases with a double down the right field line, collecting his ninth, 10th and 11th RBIs of the year. Lawson scored on a wild pitch a few moments later before
Andrew Martinez brought in Olivier from third with an RBI groundout, accounting for the final ERAU run of the night.
Goodall tossed a scoreless eighth and then a perfect ninth to wrap it up for Embry-Riddle, delivering the first Eagle Valentine's Day shutout since 2006.
Lawson finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Guttveg went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Olivier had two RBIs and two runs, with Forster collecting two hits.
The Eagles look to win the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
