DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team, behind starting pitcher
Dillon Moran, cooled down a red-hot Flagler squad on Tuesday night, 7-3. The Eagles (8-2) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and then relied on solid pitching the rest of the way to send the Saints (9-2) to just their second loss in 2020.
Moran, starting for the first time in his young collegiate career, was superb, holding the Saints to just three hits over the first five innings, allowing just one runner to reach scoring position en route to his first win of the season.
The Eagles scored five runs in the second inning, forcing Flagler starter Casey Todd from the game and taking control of the contest early on.
Josh Reynolds began the frame with a ringing double to center, moving to third when
John Devine hit a liner off Todd's glove to put Eagles on the corners with no outs.
Cody Forster doubled to left center for the first run of the night, and after Todd was relieved,
Jake Mottice greeted new Saint pitcher Austin Kunde with a base hit through the right side of the infield to make it 2-0.
Kyle Guttveg collected a sac fly for a 3-0 Eagle lead and after the Eagles loaded the bases in front of
Andrew Martinez, a ground ball brought in two more ERAU runs when the a throw from first to second went into left field.
Moran faced the minimum in the third to deliver a shutdown inning, and worked around a pair of base hits in the fifth to send the game to the sixth inning with his team still leading 5-0. In the fourth,
Luis Olivier singled to left center, recording the 200th hit of his Embry-Riddle career and becoming just the seventh Eagle ever to reach the 200-hit mark.
Flagler walked three times in the sixth against
Daniel Rutherford, ultimately scoring three runs to get back into the game, but
John Barone was able to limit the damage and keep the Eagles in front 5-3 by striking out Nikolas Dague to end the frame.
The home team got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice with two outs, the first on a
Mike Lawson single to center, plating Guttveg, and after Olivier was intentionally walked in front of Martinez, the Eagle left fielder doubled to left to score Lawson and give the Eagles a 7-3 lead.
Flagler sent nine batters to the plate over the final three innings against Barone,
Joe Balsam and
Samuel Brunnig, none of them reached base, and Brunnig punctuated the contest by striking out the side in the ninth.
Moran (1-0) got the win, needing just 58 pitches to get through five frames. Martinez finished with two RBIs, while Guttveg and Forster both had a pair of hits.
The Eagles open Sunshine State Conference play this weekend on the road at Saint Leo. Friday night's single game is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
