WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team extended its 2020 unbeaten streak to four matches with a 6-1 Sunshine State Conference win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday. Playing at the Sailfish's Mitch Gornto Tennis Center, the Eagles improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SSC, while the Sailfish drop to 1-3 and 0-1 in league play.
Doubles play began with 22nd-ranked
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Andres Donayre dispatching Philipp Hoffmann and Umberto Rosi 6-2 at the top spot.
Andrej Omeragic and
Fernando Alonso followed with their 6-2 defeat of Robert Binaghi and Miguel Paz on court three to guarantee the doubles point for ERAU. Playing at the second position,
Lucas Bos and
Alexis Guedy completed the doubles sweep with their 6-4 upset of 21st-ranked Rodolfo Hasegawa and Erik Carlsten.
The Eagles' top-flight player, Ortiz Couder registered the first singles point for the Blue and Gold with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hoffmann. Loerwink made it 3-0 in favor of ERAU with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Paz on court six, but the Sailfish were able to get a point back when Carlsten topped Alonso 6-1, 6-2 on court five to make the team score 3-1.
Playing at No. 4 singles, Bos assured the Eagles of the team victory when he held off Hasegawa 6-4, 6-4.
Donayre was also able to pull out a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, as the 33rd-ranked Donayre bested Rosi in straight sets.
The last match off the court was a hard-fought battle that required two tiebreakers to determine the outcome between Guedy and Binaghi. In the end, it was Guedy who was able to walk away victorious as he won 7-6, 7-6, taking the first tiebreaker 8-6 and the second 7-4 to close out the afternoon.
The Eagles are back on the road on Friday when they travel to Valdosta, Georgia to take on No. 19 Valdosta State. Friday's match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
