Women’s Tennis Drops Valdosta State 5-2

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team notched its second consecutive road win, downing Valdosta State 5-2 at the VSU Tennis Courts on Friday. The Eagles lost the doubles point but stormed back in singles play to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Blazers are now 2-4 overall.

Valdosta State jumped out to an early lead with wins at the top two spots in doubles play. Rachelle Starreveld and Hera Brynarsdottir secured the first point of the afternoon with a 6-1 win over Roberta Krvajica and Georgina Wood on court two, and Eva Rivoal and Estee Widdershoven assured the Blazers of the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Itxaso Blanco and Alexis Marshall on court one.

The Eagles avoided the doubles sweep when Sabrina Ehrenfort and Julia Mautner downed Julia Saving and Birte Langestein 6-3 at the third position.

Following Widdershoven's 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Blanco at No. 1 singles, the Eagles found themselves trailing 2-0. But the visitors were undeterred as they rattled off straight set victories in the remaining five singles matches.

The match at the No. 3 spot saw Krvajica shut out Saving in the first set and put the Eagles on the board with a 6-4 win in the second. ERAU got its next point courtesy of a win at the fifth spot where Marshall downed Brynjarsdottir 6-3, 6-0.

Mafalda Soares took the court as the Eagles' sixth flight player and came away with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Starreveld, and Ehrenfort scored the clinching point with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Rivoal on court four.

The last match off the court saw Wood take the first set easily 6-3 against Langestein at No. 2 singles. But the ERAU senior had to battle hard for a win in the second frame and, in the end, she was able to hold off Langestein 7-6 (7-5) to seal the Eagle victory.

The Eagles are back at the Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday to host Davis & Elkins.
