Men’s Tennis Blanks Ave Maria in Season Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team grabbed a 7-0 shutout of Ave Maria in both teams' 2020 season opener, Tuesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.

A sweep of all three doubles matches secured the doubles point for the Blue and Gold. The duo of Fernando Alonso and Andrej Omeragic earned the first doubles win of the day with a 6-1 defeat of Nicholas Schneider and Marius Riedel. Juan Ortiz Couder and Andres Donayre clinched the doubles point with their 6-2 win over Nicholas Hofmeister and Alejandro Viedma, and Alexis Guedy and Lucas Bos outlasted Felipe Amorim and Adriel Bousquet 7-6 (3) to complete the sweep.

Guedy was the first to win a singles point for ERAU as he dispatched Luca Leivo 6-0, 6-1 on court three. Bos bested Michael Myrtil 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth spot and Ortiz Couder clinched the team victory with his 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Viedma on court one.

Donayre was next off the court with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Amorim on No. 2, and Alonso followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Bousquet on court five.

The last match to reach completion was on court six where Omeragic and Henrique Pruner engaged in a three-set battle. Omeragic took the first set 6-4, but Pruner responded with a 6-3 win in the second to force a third set tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was all Omeragic as the junior rattled of 10 unanswered points to win 10-0 and seal the shutout for ERAU.

Next for the Eagles is a 3:30 p.m. match against Florida National University at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
