ERAU Student-Athletes Team Up to Win Awards for Research

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Current and former Embry-Riddle student-athletes participated in the University's 2020 Discovery Day, and several garnered recognition for their research. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's event was held online, and student researchers from Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach and Prescott, Arizona campuses were given the opportunity to present the projects they had been working.

According Wes Lewis, the director of the Office of Undergraduate research, "Virtual Discovery Day provided a venue for members of the Embry-Riddle community to gather online during these challenging times to celebrate student research."

There were 56 projects presented and seven prizes were awarded during the Virtual Discovery Day.

In the undergraduate team category, two different groups comprised of current and former student-athletes took home second and third place. Women's Soccer senior Sophie Brundin, men's golf senior Quin Guzman and volleyball alumnus Izah Deang won second place for their customizable ankle brace. With the focus on soccer players, the 3D-printed device was designed to prevent ankle sprains.

Seniors Fanny Kristiansson (women's soccer) and Hannah Russell (women's track & field) placed third with their Methodology for Quantifying Resiliency of Transportation Systems project.

Kristiansson, who just completed her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, also won first place in the undergraduate individual category for her project comparing the resiliency of maritime ports.
