Eagles Fall in Overtime to West Florida

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss to end the season on Sunday. Playing in front of their home crowd, the second-seeded Eagles lost to No. 3 West Florida 1-0 in overtime in the second round of the NCAA II Championship.

With the loss, the Eagles closed out their 2021 campaign at 10-4-3. The Argonauts improved to 14-3-2 with the win and advanced to the Round of 16.

Playing with the win at their backs, the Argonauts dominated the first 45 minutes of play, outshooting the Eagles 8-1. West Florida kept the Eagles pinned in their defensive half of the field for the majority of the half and forced ERAU goalkeeper Oona Jokinen to make five saves.

The Eagles' only shot of the half was perhaps the most dangerous chance for either side. In the 45th minute, Sofia Munthe Nilsson won the ball and crossed it to and unmarked Moa Karlsson on the right side, but Karlsson's shot sailed over the goal and the half ended in a scoreless tie.

The game was a tale of two halves for the Eagles who turned things around offensively in the second frame. The Eagles matched the Argonauts with six shots, including a pair of shots by Saba Amiri and another from Grace Foyer that required West Florida netminder Charlene Favier to make saves.

With just over a minute remaining regulation, Marie Myhrvold Seim won the ball about 30 yards away from the goal and dribbled unimpeded into the box. Her shot beat Favier low but went off the post and out of play to keep the score tied at 0-0 and send the game into overtime.

West Florida had the first look at goal in the 92nd minute, but the Argonauts attempt went over the crossbar. Two minutes later, they had another chance and this time Blair Cowan capitalized on the opportunity, scoring her 10th goal of the season to give her team the win.

While the season ended earlier than the Eagles would have liked, the Eagles still had much to celebrate. The Blue and Gold swept the Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament titles and earned the right to host an NCAA II national championship event on campus for the first time in ERAU Athletics history.
