Women’s Basketball Concludes Rollins Classic With Loss to No. 18 Lakers

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team fought hard against No. 18 Grand Valley State, but the Lakers (5-0) pulled away in the second half as the Eagles (2-3) fell 67-47 to wrap up the two-day Rollins Classic.

Liz Behan nearly notched a double-double for Embry-Riddle with 11 points and nine rebounds, both season-highs for the freshman, while Macee Sugrue contributed 10 points.

Ellie Droste led Grand Valley State with 17 points

Both teams started cold from the floor. After each squad made its opening shot, the two programs missed the next eight combined shots with eight turnovers. Nikki Tucker found Shelby Bischoff for an open look behind the arc to pull the Eagles within one point with 4:22 left in the first quarter, but the Lakers used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 14-7 lead.

Embry-Riddle responded with two baskets in a row capped by Sydney Jones going coast-to-coast with a clean jumper at the 1:26 mark. However, Grand Valley State went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to make the score 18-11 in favor of the Lakers through the opening 10 minutes.

The deficit grew for the Eagles in the second quarter as the stifling man-to-man Grand Valley State defense limited Embry-Riddle to 1-for-6 on field goals in the first five minutes of the period. Trailing 25-14 with 5:32 left in the half, the Eagles found their stroke and successfully hit each of their final four shots in the quarter.

Two three-pointers by Bischoff and a Behan free throw sent Embry-Riddle into the locker room on a 7-0 run and only down by three points (30-27) at the break. In the first half, the Eagles shot 48 percent (10-of-21) from the court compared to 35 percent (11-of-31) for the Lakers.

Despite the momentum shifting toward Embry-Riddle, Grand Valley State came out shooting in the third period and opened up a 16-point advantage (45-29) with 4:32 left on the clock. The teams traded buckets from that point on until the Lakers banked in a buzzer-beating layup to end the quarter up 55-36.

After the outburst of scoring, the Eagles performed well defensively in the fourth quarter holding Grand Valley State to 12 points. However, the offense went 3-of-11 in the 10-minute span, not enough to overcome the large deficit.

Embry-Riddle will be right back in Winter Park on Wednesday as the Eagles open up Sunshine State Conference play against Rollins at 5:30 p.m.
