BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The 25th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team registered a 4-1 upset of eighth-ranked Lynn in the third-place match of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, Sunday at Lynn's Perper Tennis Complex.
In addition to avenging a tough loss to the Fighting Knights three weeks ago, the Eagles improved their overall record to 5-4 while the Fighting Knights concluded their season at 6-4.
The Eagles took command of the match early with a doubles sweep to win the doubles point. The Eagles were ahead in the match at No. 1 singles, but that contest was unfinished as
Alexis Guedy and
Lucas Bos downed Lucca Baptista and Joao Ferreira 6-3 on court two and
Fernando Alonso and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo topped Diego Gonzalez and Giovanni Araujo 6-4 on court three to earn the two points the Eagles needed to clinch doubles.
The first singles match to finish was at the No. 2 spot where 41st-ranked
Andres Donayre bested Carlos Gomez 6-3, 6-2 to put the Eagles up 2-0.
After Lynn got its only point of the day via Gonzalez's 6-4, 6-2 win over Bos at No. 4,
Tim Loerwink reclaimed the two-point cushion for the Blue and Gold with his 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Araujo on court six.
In the April 7 match between the Eagles and the Fighting Knights, the deciding point came at the top spot in the singles lineup where Joao Ferreira held off
Juan Ortiz Couder in three sets. The deciding point in Sunday's match also came down to the top-flight players, but this time it was the 29th-ranked Ortiz Couder who secured the victory, upending the 11th-ranked Ferreira 7-6 (4), 6-3 to clinch the win for the Blue & Gold.
