Men’s Tennis Drops SSC Road Match to No. 3 Saint Leo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered its second Sunshine State Conference loss of the year on Saturday, falling on the road to third-ranked Saint Leo 6-1. The Eagles are now 4-2 on the year, while Saint Leo maintains its unblemished record at 6-0.

Saint Leo won the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point, but both matches were close. Alexander Parker and Christopher Traut held off Juan Ortiz Couder and Luke Paschal 6-4, while Bruno Faletto and Nicolas Bacella topped Fernando Alonso Diaz Rodrigo by the same scored.

The Eagles were not swept in doubles play, however, as Alexi Guedy and Lucas Bos teamed up to dispatch Aurel Ciocanu and Willem van den Akker 6-2.

Straight-set wins at the third and fourth singles positions helped the Lions extend their lead to 3-0. Diaz Rodrigo fought hard against Traut, but the Lions' fifth flight player was able to hold off the ERAU freshman 6-1, 7-6 (4).

At No. 2 singles, Guedy won his first set 6-1, but was unable to finish the match, retiring due to injury after being edged by Bacella 7-6 (8-6) in the second set.

The match at the top spot lasted three full sets and saw Faletto best Ortiz Couder 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Eagles' only singles win of the day came at the No. 6 spot which was a three-setter between ERAU's Tim Loerwink and SLU's Ghali Mensour. After winning the first set 6-4, Loerwink stumbled in the second (3-6), but bounced back to win the 10-point tiebreaker 10-6.

The Eagles will play their final regular season on April 7 when they host 10th-ranked Lynn at 3:30 p.m. at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
