Men’s Soccer Breaks Through In Extra Time To Down Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. -  The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team kicked off Sunshine State Conference play with a 1-0 win in overtime against Saint Leo on Saturday night. This marks the second season in a row the Eagles won their conference-opening match.

Nathan Hubbs waited for the perfect moment to score his first ever goal as a member of the Blue and Gold. His successful shot in the 104th minute gave Embry-Riddle the victory in a grueling battle.

A dormant first half came and went as the Eagles and Lions went scoreless and combined for six total shots, three of which were on goal.

Embry-Riddle's starting goaltender Jack Crichton made a great diving save in the sixth minute. Saint Leo's Noah Kvifte hovered around the top of the penalty area and took a shot from about 25 feet out that hooked to the left. Crichton lunged to his right and got his arms on the ball for a save.

Out of the break, the Eagles flipped the switch and consistently applied pressure on offense.

Amit Libgot had a prime opportunity in the 62nd minute to give the Eagles the lead. Despite about 10 or so players crowded inside the goal box, Libgot took a chance from 15 feet out. His shot rolled on the ground and snuck past multiple Lion defenders but was eventually saved by Saint Leo's Riccardo Zarri.

Six minutes later, Olav Olsen Aamlid had an incredible strike around 40 feet from the goal. His rocket of a shot appeared to be heading toward the upper left corner until Zarri made a leaping save to send it wide.

After registering just two shots in the first 45 minutes, Embry-Riddle recorded 15 in the second half. Unfortunately, the plethora of chances didn't result in a goal, and the match headed into extra time.

Finally, Nathan Hubbs broke the scoreless tie with the golden goal in the 104th minute. A pass from Nelson Andres Pusquin set Hubbs up with a clear shot, and he scored on a ball to the bottom right corner of the goal.

The Eagles' 22 shots were the most since Embry-Riddle notched 24 against Johnson & Wales back on Sept. 27, 2014.

Olav Olsen Aamlid led the Eagles with five total shots. His three shots on goal tied for the most with Amit Libgot. Jack Crichton picked up his first win of the season in the net and tallied three saves.

Embry-Riddle finishes its five-match road trip on Wednesday with a contest against Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
