Men’s Soccer Overwhelmed by Sharks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The road woes continued for the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team as the Eagles fell 5-1 to Nova Southeastern, who received votes in the latest national poll, at the NSU Soccer Complex on Saturday night. It was the only Sunshine State Conference match of the week as Hurricane Ian forced five contests to either be postponed or canceled.

Just over a minute was needed to score the first goal of the match when the Sharks (4-2-3, 3-1-1 SSC) struck 62 seconds into the match for a 1-0 advantage.

Embry-Riddle's (2-5-2, 0-3-1 SSC) starting keeper Thomas Loesel managed to stop the next two shots on goal, which came during the third and sixth minutes. The sophomore stood in front of a rocket of a shot at 2:50 from the left side. In a split second, Loesel held out his arms in front of his chest and sent the ball away.

Nova Southeastern dominated possession in the first half, forcing the Eagles to play defensively. Halfway through, Embry-Riddle began pressing into its offensive end. The Eagles attempted multiple crosses, none of which led to any success.

However, Embry-Riddle even things up in the 28th minute. Konstantin Kosoric received a pass inside the box on the right side. He let a shot rip, but it was saved. The Sharks' keeper was unable to control the ball as it deflected to Noah Sims, who was sitting about 10 feet away from the goal in the middle of the box. Sims easily tapped the ball in to tie the match at 1-1, his first score as a member of the Blue and Gold.

Unfortunately, NSU blew the game open over the final eight minutes of the opening period. Three different Sharks scored at 37:53, 38:14, and 44:21 to put the Eagles down 4-1 into the break.

Once again, Loesel was tested early on as he dove to his right to save a skipping shot by NSU just a minute and a half into the second half. Then in the 54th minute, the Boca Raton, Florida, native launched his body once again, lunging to his left to send another shot wide that was about waist high.

The Blue and Gold were sluggish offensively to start the second half. It wasn't until the 64th minute when Jano Baxmann fought off three defenders to have a clear look from just outside of the box on the left side. The sophomore attempted to curl a shot into the top right corner, but it missed just a foot wide.

Six minutes later, Tom Shepherd cut to the right on a pair of Shark defenders and ripped a shot toward the left. It took a strong bounce but was deflected away by the goalie. The first-year Eagle sent another hopping shot toward the net on a set piece in the 76th minute, but that was also saved.

Sims became the seventh different Eagle to score during the 2022 campaign while Kosoric picked up his first collegiate assist. Shepherd and Stefano Grimaldi led the squad in shots (2) and shots on goal (2). Loesel picked up six saves in the net.

Embry-Riddle is back home on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a meeting with Saint Leo at 7 p.m. The Eagles will look to stay unbeaten at the ERAU Soccer Stadium after recording two wins and a tie so far through the season.
