MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Embry-Riddle Volleyball lost a hard-fought battle to 16
th-ranked Barry in Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday. The Eagles lost in three by set scores of 24-26, 19-25 and 17-25 to move to 13-9 overall and 4-7 in the SSC, while league-leading Barry improved to 19-2 overall and 10-1 in the league.
The Eagles led the Bucs on the block, 16-10, with
Jenna Bishop and
Hunter Ackermann totaling five block assists apiece.
Cameron Gilleland recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs.
In the opening set, both teams traded points, leading to a 9-9 tie. A pair of kills helped Barry take a 12-9 lead and that lead remained at three points until kills by Gilleland and
Jaden McBride and a pair of blocks helped put the Eagles ahead 19-18. The closing moments of the set featured six ties and two lead changes and, in the end, back-to-back blocks by Diana Akopova gave the Bucs a one-set advantage (26-24).
After Barry went up 2-0 to open the second frame, the Eagles responded with a 4-0 run to take over the lead at 4-2. But the lead was short-lived as the Bucs used an 8-0 run to open a 14-6 cushion. Still trailing by eight (16-8) the Eagles put together another run of their own to make it a two-point game, 16-14. ERAU was unable to get any closer, however, as the Bucs, who had a .333 kill percentage, won the second set 25-19.
The teams were even early in the third with four points apiece, but a 14-2 Barry run helped the home team notch its 10th SSC win of the year.
The Eagles' next match will be at Palm Beach Atlantic at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
