Men’s Soccer Blanked by Tars

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team continued its three-match homestand with a 2-0 loss to Rollins on Saturday at the ERAU Soccer Stadium. It was a rematch as the two squads faced off earlier in the season and finished at a 2-2 draw in Winter Park, Florida.

Defense dominated the early going as neither team managed to send up a shot until 24 minutes into the contest when the Eagles' (2-9-3, 0-7-2 Sunshine State Conference) Eden Bokobza climbed over a defenseman to put his head on a cross, but he sent the ball just high.

Less than three minutes later, the Tars (8-3-2, 4-3-1 SSC) had their first scoring attempt of the evening. A shot at the top of the box curved to the left and forced Thomas Loesel, the SSC leader in saves, to lunge to his right to disrupt the shot. Unfortunately, Rollins eventually broke into the scoring column at 31:25.

With time winding down in the opening half, the Eagles were mere inches away from having a prime opportunity at an equalizer. Seth Conway chased after a through ball down the right side and was tripped up right on the line of the box. The official marked the spot of the foul  just on the outside which led to a free kick instead of a penalty kick. Unable to capitalize on the opportunity, Embry-Riddle entered the intermission with a 1-0 deficit.

The Eagles were on the offensive out of the break. Yali Shiray chipped a pass over the Tars' defensive line to Bokobza seven minutes into the second period. The striker flicked the ball up into the air and over a defender. However, Rollins' keeper charged at the loose ball. Bokobza noticed the netminder attempting to corral the ball, so he broke off slightly to the right. Instead of attacking the ball directly, the goalie stepped to the side in front of Bokobza and the two collided, allowing the ball to continue to roll. Bokobza ran after the ball and put it over the goal line, but the play was ruled dead and Bokobza was charged with a foul.

Louis Walker nearly found the tying score in the 68th minute with his header. The senior created separation at the back post from the defender guarding him. Tom Shepherd sent the set piece to Walker, who headed it from just a couple feet in front of the net, but it sailed over the crossbar.

Fast forward five minutes and the deficit grew to 2-0 for the Eagles at 72:46. From that point on, the Tars controlled possession and ran out the clock.

Bokobza led the Blue and Gold in shots with three. He also recorded Embry-Riddle's lone shot on goal. In the net, Loesel notched a save.

The Eagles conclude their 2022 season with senior night on Friday, Oct. 28. Embry-Riddle hosts Florida Tech for a rematch at 7 p.m. The Panthers took the meeting earlier in the season 1-0 in Melbourne, Florida.
