Volleyball Tops Rollins, 3-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle volleyball team got back into the win column on Tuesday with a 3-1 defeat of Rollins (7-18, 2-12) in Sunshine State Conference play. The Eagles won by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-16 to improve to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the league.

Jaden McBride and Cameron Gilleland paced the Eagle offense, registering their 10th and eighth double-doubles, respectively. McBride totaled 17 kills and 10 digs to become just the 20th player in program history to amass 700 kills. She currently ranks 19th all-time with 716 career kills. Gilleland tallied 15 kills and 12 digs on the night, as well as a match-high four service aces.

It was the Tars who raced out to a 4-1 lead to start Tuesday's contest. The Eagles caught up quickly and opened a 14-7 lead midway through the first frame. Rollins battled back and eventually knotted the score at 22-22 but kills by Gilleland and Jenna Bishop helped ERAU secure the points they needed for the 25-22 win.

Neither side was able to establish a commanding lead to start the second, which led to a 17-17 tie. The Eagles used a Rollins attacking error and a Dana Gibbons kill to go up by two (19-17) and Isabella Rujano came off the bench to add three kills to two from McBride and one from Gilleland in a 6-2 Eagle run that earned the home team a 25-20 win and a two-set advantage.

The third set saw the Tars rally from a 9-3 deficit to stay alive with a 25-23 win. Rollins hit .323 in the set and recorded just two attack errors and used 9-2 run to overtake the Eagles late in the set.

Embry-Riddle led from the first serve in the fourth set and never relinquished the lead. The Eagles hit .308 compared to just .111 by the Tars, while stout defense turned back the Tars' efforts to finish plays. Rollins managed to cut into the Eagles' 10-point (18-8) lead behind the serve of Marta Tsaneva who helped make it a six-point (18-12) game, but that was as close as the visitors would get. The end of the set saw the Eagles outscore the Tars 7-4 to seal the win.

The Eagles are back in the ICI Center at 7 p.m. on Friday for an SSC rematch against Eckerd.
