Men’s Soccer Starts Strong But Fades in 3-2 Loss to Saint Leo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A 2-0 lead was not enough for Embry-Riddle to pull out a win against Saint Leo on Saturday as the Lions (6-5-0, 1-4-0 Sunshine State Conference) scored three times in a six minute span to sour the Eagles' (2-6-3, 0-4-2 SSC) return home for their first match at the ERAU Soccer Stadium in over two weeks.

Despite the result, there were some positives to take away from the match. It was the first time this season the Blue and Gold outshot the opposition (15-14) and the second occasion the Eagles earned more corner kicks (5-4).

Embry-Riddle wiped the goose egg off the scoreboard in the 21st minute when Tom Shepherd dribbled up to the back right corner of the box. He saw Yali Shiray cut into the middle and crossed the ball in. Shiray leaned forward and used his head to bounce a shot through the right side from five feet out for the sophomore's first career goal and Shepherd's first assist.

The lead doubled five minutes later on Sandro Henning's third successful penalty kick of the season, which is tied for the fifth most in a single year in program history and tied for the seventh most in a career.

Noah Sims dispossessed a Lion defender and battled him off with his right arm at the top of the box. The Auburndale, Florida, native sent a strong shot off the crossbar that deflected to Henning just ten feet out on the right side. Henning waited for the ball to drop to the ground before he took a shot. Two defenders raced in to block it, although one was called for a hand ball on the deflection which led to the penalty kick. Henning sent a dribbler to the bottom right corner to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage 25 minutes in, which they held on to for the remainder of the period. It was the first time since Oct. 30, 2019, the Blue and Gold possessed a multi-goal lead.

At the break, Embry-Riddle felt in control, outshooting Saint Leo 10-6 with three corner kicks to the Lions' zero.

Seth Conway nearly pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 71st minute. Shepherd stood at midfield and sent a through ball up to the sophomore. Conway looked over his shoulder to control the pass with a bounce off his chest. A Lion pressured him from behind and pushed Conway but not before he got a shot off with his right foot from about 15 feet out. However, it was saved by the keeper.

From the 78th to the 84th minute, Saint Leo rattled off three scores to leave the Eagles shocked and with a deficit.

Eden Bokobza had a chance at an equalizer with 2:30 left. A set piece found the striker on the far side of the box. He managed to make contact with the ball using his head, but the shot traveled wide right.

As the seconds wound off the clock, Shiray almost mimicked Sims' performance against Florida Southern earlier in the week. The six-foot tall midfielder trapped a cross in the middle of the box with his chest. Just fifteen feet from the goal line, Shiray's one-touch shot just barely went over the woodwork with 34 seconds remaining.

Henning and Shiray both scored in the affair with the former adding to his team-high total (4). Shepherd grabbed an assist. As for shots, Henning, Shiray and Sims led the squad with three each. The trio also had a shot on goal as did Conway. In the net, Loesel added two saves to his league-leading total of 55 during 2022.

Embry-Riddle hits the road one final time in 2022 when the Eagles head to RV Palm Beach Atlantic for a match on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
