WINTER PARK, Fla.— A last-second putback by
Jenna Teterycz lifted the Embry-Riddle women's basketball team to a 48-46 win over Sunshine State Conference foe Rollins (2-2, 0-1), Saturday at the Tars' Warden Arena. The Eagles are now 3-0 on the young season and 1-0 conference play.
Saturday's win featured a career day for
Rachel Murray who led all players with a career-high 17 points and a career-best eight rebounds, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the three point line.
Keturah Balabyekkubo and
Madyson Jean-Louis added 10 and nine points, respectively, with both players grabbing four boards apiece.
The first quarter saw Rollins jump out to a 4-0 lead, but the Eagles answered with a 6-0 run, prompting a Rollins timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Tars scored six points in a row to go up 10-6, and although the Eagles were able to close the gap to two (12-10), Rollins ended the period on a 7-2 run to lead 19-12 heading into the second.
An offensive rebound and a putback by Keturah Balaybekkubo triggered a 5-0 Eagle run to start the second frame. A jumper by Shanelle Heredia with 6:06 left in the period gave the Tars a 21-17 lead, but those were the last Rollins points of the half. The Eagle defense forced four Tar turnovers in the final six minutes, while three-pointers by Murray and
Sarah Napoli helped ERAU overtake the home team and take a 23-21 edge into the locker room at the break.
A low-scoring third quarter for the Eagles featured five ties and two lead changes. ERAU managed just three field goals and 3-of-6 free throws during that 10-minute span, while Rollins was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line and knocked down five of their field goal attempts to take a 36-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
Rollins' Lucy Leen knocked down a three to extend the Tar advantage to six (39-33) to start the final frame. Jean-Louis answered with one of her two threes in the game and another trey by Balabyekkubo tied the score at 39-39. Another three by Leen put the Tars back up by three (42-39), but once again, the Eagles responded, this time in the form of a Murray jumper to make it 42-41 Rollins.
The score remained unchanged over the next 4:25 until the 2:30 mark when Murray knocked down a pair of free throws to give ERAU its first lead of the quarter. The next three scoring plays featured two Leen free throws, a Murray three and Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez jumper resulting in a 46-46 tie with 31 seconds remaining. Following a pair of Embry-Riddle timeouts, the Eagles got the ball to Jean-Louis who put up a shot with two seconds left. Her attempt bounced off the rim, but Teterycz, who had not scored all game, saved the best for last as she grabbed the rebound and finished a layup to give the Eagles the win.
The Eagles will play their first home game of the season on Friday when they host Sioux Falls in the first game of the Bahama House Shootout. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
