Women’s Basketball Drops Home Contest to Lynn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Madyson Jean-Louis scored a career-best 18 points, but it was not enough to push Embry-Riddle past Lynn (7-2, 2-2) as the Eagles fell to the Fighting Knights 71-55, Wednesday at the ICI Center. The loss evened the Eagles' overall record at 4-4 and drops them to 1-3 in the Sunshine State Conference.

One of two double-digit scorers for the Eagles, Jean-Louis was 5-of-8 from the field, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Sydney Jones came off the bench to contribute 14 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Keturah Balabyekkubo led the Eagles on the boards with seven rebounds.

Lynn opened the first quarter on a 6-0 run and led by seven with 3:24 left in the period. Jean-Louis was the catalyst behind an exciting end to the frame for the Eagles. In successive plays, the sophomore hit a jumper, grabbed a defensive rebound, hit two free throws and finished a layup to pull the Eagles within on (15-14).

With 30 seconds left and Lynn leading 18-14, Mary Lengemann was fouled on her way to the basket. After making one of two free throws, she stole the inbounds pass and set Kailey Turpening up for a pair of free throws. Lynn's next inbounds pass was picked off by Jones and an offensive rebound kept the ball with the Eagles with 4.8 seconds left. ERAU got the ball into Balabyekkubo. She drove to the basket and her shot went through the hoop as the time expired to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, 19-18.

Rachel Murray's three to start the second quarter gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game. However, the Fighting Knights responded immediately and through the remainder of the quarter, Lynn shot 80 percent (8-of10) from the field and scored 12 points off six Eagle turnovers to take a 40-30 halftime lead.

A close third quarter saw the Eagles with a 13-11 edge in the scoring column. Lynn extended its lead to 15 (45-30) at the 6:40 mark, but two minutes later, the Eagles put together a 6-0 run, and at the end of the quarter, the deficit was down to eight (51-43).

Trailing 55-45 at the 7:14 mark in the fourth, the Eagles got back-to-back threes from Turpening and Murray to narrow the gap to four (55-51) with 5:57 remaining. Ella Fiore ended a scoreless 90 seconds for both teams with two of her 15 points on the night and that basket marked the start of a 12-0 run for Lynn. The Fighting Knights bested the Eagles 9-4 in made field goals and shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) in the final 10 minutes to seal the win.

The Eagles will take a break for finals but will be back in action Dec. 16-17 to host the Embry-Riddle Holiday Invitational. The first game of the tournament on Friday will be the Eagles' annual Education Day game and ERAU will welcome children from several local elementary schools to the ICI Center. The Blue and Gold will take on Flagler at 11 a.m.
