Men’s Tennis Defeats Gyrenes 7-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to three matches after downing Ave Maria 7-0 on Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.

From start to finish, the Eagles (3-1) controlled the contest by winning all nine matches. Embry-Riddle's three pairs dropped only a combined three games in doubles play against the Gyrenes (1-3). Lukas Schneider and Michele Iftimie cruised past Bruno Duarte and Felipe Amorim 6-1 on court two. Alexis Guedy and Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo kept Adriel Bousquet and Carlos Thireau from winning a single game to secure the doubles point for the Eagles in doubles No. 3. Juan Ortiz Couder and Andres Donayre made it a clean sweep in doubles play for Embry-Riddle with their 6-2 win against Fernando Orihuela and Sebastian Grijalva.

Despite being in the last pair to finish, Ortiz Couder was the first to finish in singles competition as the Madrid, Spain, native soared past Duarte 6-0, 6-2 in singles No. 1. Diaz Rodrigo held his opponent, Tom Alias, to one game win as he downed the Gyrene 6-0, 6-1 in singles No. 5.

Guedy also needed only two sets to dispatch Grijalva 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles to clinch the win for Eagles. In the only three-set match of the competition, Donayre used a 10-5 tiebreaker in No. 2 singles to beat Fernando Orihuela after splitting the first two sets 6-4, 3-6.

Iftimie kept his singles record unblemished (5-0) after defeating Thireau 6-3, 7-6 in singles No. 4 and Tim Loerwink surged 6-3, 6-2 in singles No. 6 over Amorim to give Embry-Riddle all six singles points.

Next up for the Eagles is a meeting with Valdosta State on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
