Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game to Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team suffered its fifth road loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Barry, 67-56. With the loss, the Eagles (11-12) fall to seventh in the Sunshine State Conference standings at 9-9, while Barry moves to 15-7 overall and 12-6 in league play.

Keturah Balabyekkubo was one of three Eagle players scoring in double figures and recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Madyson Jean-Louis tallied 13 points and six boards, while Macee Sugrue added 11 points.

Emma Hergot led all scorers with 21 points, and she, along with Ashia Poole (12 pts), Harriet Swindels (11 pts), and Nerea Baena (11 pts) combined for 55 of Barry's 67 points.

The Eagles held 12-11 edge at the end of the first quarter and increased the lead to the three points (14-11) to start the second period. The stats showed the Eagles with a 50 percent field goal shooting percentage in the second quarter, but they only manage eight attempts compared to 22 by Barry as they came empty on nine possessions due to turnovers. Those miscues, coupled with an 8-4 Barry advantage on the offensive boards resulted in 18 points for the Lady Bucs, and at the half, the home team led 31-26.

The Eagles opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to overtake the Lady Bucs 33-31. Barry answered and quickly reclaimed a four-point lead which they held through much of the quarter. Both teams were evenly matched with seven field goals and two three-pointers a piece, but that parity meant the Eagles couldn't reduce the halftime deficit, and as the buzzer sounded to end the third, Camilla Flefil hit a three to make it 49-42 in favor of Barry.

Barry was the better shooting team in the fourth quarter shooting 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the field compared to 33.3 percent (5-of-15) by the Eagles. Barry built the lead to 12, but an 8-2 run helped ERAU make it a six-point (62-56) game with 2:38 left to play. Balabyekkubo's layup at the 2:22 mark turned out to be the final points of the contest for the Eagles as their scoring drought in the last 2:22 helped the Lady Bucs to the 11-point win.

The Eagles play their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Lakeland to take on Florida Southern.

The Embry-Riddle women's basketball season is presented by Daytona Mitsubishi.
