Baseball Falls to Tars in Series Finale

WINTER PARK, Fla. - After being shut out through the first two games of the series, the Embry-Riddle baseball team found some much-needed offense in the final game of its opening Sunshine State Conference series against Rollins. However, the Eagles fell 11-8 despite the production at the plate.

Three batters for Embry-Riddle hit the ball out of the park, marking the team's most home runs in a game since May 11, 2019, against Saint Leo. Jeremy Kennedy-Davis, Nick Hoffman, and Josh Reynolds all picked up their first home runs of the season.

Just like in yesterday's contest, the Eagles (1-8, 0-3 SSC) found themselves in a hole after the first inning as Rollins (7-2, 3-0 SSC) plated three runs in the first frame. Two hits and two walks started the inning to bring home the first run. With the bases loaded and still nobody out, starting pitcher Kelsey Ward struck out the next two batters with the hopes of limiting the damage. However, another walk and a hit batter pushed two more across for Rollins to bring Embry-Riddle's deficit to 3-0.

In the third inning, the Eagles scored their first run of the series when Kennedy-Davis blasted a ball over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season, but the offense didn't stop there. The following three batters reached base to fill the diamond for Max Law, who doubled down the left-field line to plate Alex Britton and Richey Lakes.

Zach Coldsnow picked up his team-best sixth RBI of the season when his ground ball gave Daniel Trillo the opportunity to score and give Embry-Riddle its first lead of the series. Andrew Martinez capped off the five-run inning with an RBI single up the middle to put the Eagles up 5-3.

The Tars answered in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI single and a three-run home run to put Embry-Riddle down by three once again.

Both squads traded two-run blows in the fifth frame. Reynolds brought the Eagles within one in the run column with his two-run shot to right, but Rollins mimicked his at-bat in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 10-7.

Embry-Riddle was in a perfect position to make a surge in the sixth inning when Hoffman joined the home run derby with a blast of his own to bring the Eagles within two at 10-8. An error and two hit batters loaded the bases with no outs, but Embry-Riddle was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Another Tars' home run in the eighth moved the Eagles' deficit to 11-8, which was too much for the team to overcome in the ninth.

Casey Keller (0-2) received the loss on the mound. Eight of the nine starters for Embry-Riddle recorded a hit in the contest. Britton and Martinez had two each to lead the team.

The Eagles conclude their nine-game road trip next weekend with a series against Nova Southeastern beginning on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
