FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team was just a few plays away from taking the series against the No. 7 Nova Southeastern Sharks (12-0, 3-0 SSC), but the home team was able to win both ends of a Saturday doubleheader, 8-5, and 6-4, completing the series sweep of ERAU (1-11, 0-6 SSC).
In game one the Eagles were down big, 8-0, after five, but rallied to score five in the final two innings and brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth. The Sharks struck early and often, scoring multiple runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.
ERAU got its first run of the day in the eighth when
Ryan Carroll had a sac fly to score
Kevin Vittoria, and then in the ninth the Eagles made things interesting for the Sharks. Two runs scored on a Vittoria double, and after a throwing error brought in two more,
Josh Reynolds came to the plate with two on and two outs, but a foul out to first ended the threat and the game.
In the series finale, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead and
Garner Spoljaric was able to keep the Shark hitters at bay until a lone run in the fourth, but ERAU was unable to add to its lead and the Sharks took advantage, tying the game with a solo homer in the sixth before taking a 3-2 lead on a sac fly.
NSU increased its lead to 5-2 in the seventh, but Vittoria was able to score in the eighth to make it 5-3. The Sharks responded with a lone run in their half of the eighth, before the Eagles got a leadoff home run from
Robert Post in the ninth. ERAU put runners at second and third with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game in the Sharks' favor.
ERAU returns to Sliwa Stadium to host Tiffin on Sunday, Feb. 27, first pitch is at 3 p.m.
